MISSION AND HISTORY

Our Mission

Ballet Chesapeake’s mission is to enrich the community by sharing the power and joy of dance— empowering dancers through high-quality dance education, inspiring audiences with exceptional artistic excellence, and expanding the accessibility and impact of dance through active community engagement.

About Us

Ballet Chesapeake (BC) is the premier classical and contemporary dance school in Northern Maryland.

We are dedicated to providing exceptional dance education in a nurturing and inclusive environment that promotes artistic excellence, personal growth, and a lifelong love of dance. Through rigorous training and professional experiences, we prepare students for success in life beyond the studio.

Ballet Chesapeake does not discriminate based on race, color, religion (creed), gender, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation in any of its activities or operations.

Training and Programs

BC offers a comprehensive curriculum through our conservatory in ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, and other disciplines, serving students from their earliest creative movement classes through advanced pre-professional levels.

Faculty and Staff promote the highest standards of classroom behavior, assist student discovery of strengths and challenges, and create a nurturing and professional atmosphere that supports all dancers in building leadership, mentorship, and friendships.

We strongly believe that training in ballet is the basis for all other forms and genres of dance.  Dancers in other disciplines are well-served and have greater technical abilities when they have a solid core foundation of ballet training.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that all dancers, no matter their preference or primary interest, enroll and continue with classical ballet training in addition to other genres to promote the technical advancement and overall quality of technique for each dancer.

We are proud to support dancers who wish to pursue dance at the collegiate or professional level through our BC Launch Program. that includes coaching, mentorship, audition preparation, and portfolio building. As part of this commitment, BC also hosts a chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA), allowing students to earn national recognition for their artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement.

Performance Opportunities

BC students have access to unique and meaningful performance experiences. The student company presents two major productions each year, including The Nutcracker and a full-length spring ballet, as well as community engagement performances. Dancers must audition to participate in our student company (age 11+) or our children's cast (ages 6+). These opportunities enable our dancers to perform in professional-caliber productions alongside guest artists and company members, thereby gaining valuable stage experience.

Commitment to Excellence and Safety

At Ballet Chesapeake, we uphold the highest standards of safety, wellness, and age-appropriate artistic practices. We are committed to ensuring that every dancer trains in an environment that prioritizes both physical and emotional well-being. Our faculty is dedicated to creating a healthy, respectful, and inspiring space where dancers can grow not only in technique and artistry but also in confidence, character, and community. Through mindful instruction and supportive mentorship, we empower each student to flourish on and off the stage. Nutrition, cross-training, and injury prevention seminars are offered regularly to our company members.

A Legacy of Success

Graduates of Ballet Chesapeake have gone on to study at prestigious programs and institutions, including the American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, The Rock School, and university dance programs across the country.

Their success reflects our commitment to excellence and our dedication to helping every dancer realize their full potential. Whether your goal is to dance professionally, pursue collegiate dance studies, or simply experience the joy and discipline of movement, Ballet Chesapeake offers a pathway to grow, perform, and succeed. We invite you to join our vibrant dance community and discover the power of dance to transform lives.

Our values

Our passion for dance is what drives us. The deep respect we hold for our students and audiences, faculty and staff, and the art of dance dictates that we hold ourselves, and those around us, to the highest standards in all we do

We strive to create a nurturing environment in which the student’s development is supported, encouraging growth and lifelong learning through passion, hard work, and critical thinking. Our pre-professional program provides students exceptional clarity and strength while encouraging a love of dance and healthy body image.

Our purpose is to enrich the lives of our patrons, inspire them, broaden their horizons, and lift them higher. Our patrons, in turn, inspire us to reach new levels of excellence. Without them, we could not exist.

We endeavor to create a space for everyone in our organization to feel respected, embraced, and celebrated for our differences, and to build a community that appreciates each individual for their contributions regardless of race, color, gender, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, religion, or sexual orientation. We will consider diverse perspectives in creating programming and be mindful of different backgrounds as we collaborate with artists to support our work. We will strive for diversity in recruiting company dancers, staff, leadership, and board members. We will create policies that support equity and diversity.

We strive to perform in various easily accessible and affordable venues throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
