Our Early Dance Program includes Dance With Me for ages 1–3, Creative Movement for ages 3–4, and PreBallet & Tap for ages 4–5. Class placement is based primarily on age so that instruction is developmentally appropriate.
Parents or caregivers participate with their child in Dance With Me. As dancers progress into our independent preschool classes, they begin participating on their own, helping them develop confidence and classroom independence.
That’s completely normal, especially for a child’s first dance class. Our teachers understand that young dancers may need time to become comfortable in a new environment. We focus on creating a welcoming, positive experience while helping children gradually build confidence and independence.
Classes introduce age-appropriate dance concepts including coordination, balance, rhythm, musicality, creative movement, listening skills, and basic ballet technique. Just as importantly, young dancers practice taking turns, following directions, participating in a group, and becoming comfortable in a classroom setting.
Both! Classes are designed to be joyful and engaging while introducing developmentally appropriate dance fundamentals. As children grow, they can progress into Ballet Chesapeake’s school-age ballet and dance programs for more structured technical training.
Performance opportunities vary by class and age. We want a young dancer’s first experiences with dance and the stage to be positive and age-appropriate. Families will receive information about available performance opportunities throughout the season.
New students do not need to purchase a full dance wardrobe before trying a class. We have swap bins that you are welcome to borrow from. Contact us before your trial and we’ll let you know what your child should wear and what may be available to borrow. You can find our dress code below.
Absolutely. Ballet Chesapeake’s Early Dance classes are open to all children. Dance helps young students develop coordination, strength, musicality, confidence, creativity, and body awareness.
As dancers grow, they can progress into Ballet Chesapeake’s school-age dance program. Students have opportunities to continue their training in ballet and other dance styles and, for those who want more intensive training as they get older, progress toward advanced and pre-professional opportunities.
